As I start with blog on Madhurakavi Alwar’s Thirunakshatram followed by Chitra Pournami, this article is dedicated to ‘Kanninun Siruthambu’, composed by Madhurakawi Alwar.
The verses sing praises for his Acharyar Nammalwar as he expresses surrender at his feet.

கண்ணிநுண் சிறுத்தாம்பினால் கட்டுண்ணப்
பண்ணிய பெருமாயன் என்னப்பனில்
நண்ணித் தென்குருகூர் நம்பி என்றக்கால்
அண்ணிக்கும் அமுதூறும் என் நாவுக்கே.
English Meaning:
When I utter the name of the Lord of Thirukkurugur (Nammalvar), who is dearer than even Krishna who was bound by a small cord, my tongue overflows with sweetness like nectar at all times.

நாவினால் நவிற்று இன்பம் எய்தினேன்
மேவினேன் அவன் பொன்னடி மெய்ம்மையே
தேவு மற்றறியேன் குருகூர் நம்பி
பாவின் இன்னிசை பாடித் திரிவேனே.
English Meaning:
By speaking (his name), I attained bliss. I have truly embraced his golden feet. I know no other God than Nammalvar of Kurugur, and I will keep singing his sweet verses.

திரிதந்து ஆகிலும் தேவபிரான் உடைக்
கரிய கோலத் திருவுருக் காண்பன்நான்
பெரிய வண் குருகூர் நகர் நம்பிக்காள்
உரியனாய் அடியேன் பெற்ற நன்மையே.
English Meaning:
Even if I were to see the divine form of the Lord Himself, I consider it my greatest fortune to belong instead to the great Nammalvar of Kurugur.

நன்மையால் மிக நான்மறையாளர்கள்
புன்மை ஆகக் கருதுவர் ஆதலின்
அன்னையாய் அத்தனாய் என்னை ஆண்டிடும்
தன்மையான் சடகோபன் என் நம்பியே.
English Meaning:
Though the learned may consider this path insignificant, Nammalvar (Satakopan), who is like both mother and father to me, has taken me under his care.

நம்பினேன் பிறர் நன் பொருள் தன்னையும்
நம்பினேன் மடவாரையும் முன் எலாம்
செம்பொன் மாடத் திருக்குருகூர் நம்பிக்கு
அன்பனாய் அடியேன் சதிர்த்தேன் இன்றே.
English Meaning:
Earlier, I trusted worldly wealth and relationships, but now I have given all that up and become a loving servant of Nammalvar of the golden city of Kurugur.

இன்று தொட்டு எழுமையும் எம்பிரான்
நின்று தன் புகழ் ஏத்த அருளினான்
குன்ற மாடத் திருக்குருகூர் நம்பி
என்றும் என்னை இகழ்விலன் காண்மினே.
English Meaning:
From today and for all births, my Lord (Nammalvar) has blessed me to praise him. He will never abandon or reject me.

கண்டு கொண்டு என்னைக் காரி மாறப்பிரான்
பண்டை வல்வினை மாற்றி அருளினான்
எண் திசையும் அறிய இயம்புகேன்
ஒண் தமிழ்ச் சடகோபன் அருளையே.
English Meaning:
Nammalvar saw me, accepted me, and removed my past karmas. I will proclaim his grace in all directions through his beautiful Tamil.

அருள் கொண்டாடும் அடியவர் இன்புற
அருளினான் அவ் அருமறையின் பொருள்
அருள் கொண்டு ஆயிரம் இன் தமிழ் பாடினான்
அருள் கண்டீர் இவ் உலகினில் மிக்கதே.
English Meaning:
Out of grace, he revealed the deep meanings of the Vedas and composed a thousand sweet Tamil verses for devotees to rejoice. His grace is the greatest treasure in this world.

மிக்க வேதியர் வேதத்தின் உட்பொருள்
நிற்கப் பாடி என் நெஞ்சுள் நிறுத்தினான்
தக்க சீர்ச் சடகோபன் என் நம்பிக்கே
ஆட்புக்க காதல் அடிமைப் பயன் அன்றே.
English Meaning:
Nammalvar sang the inner meaning of the Vedas and firmly established it in my heart. Becoming his devoted servant is the true fruit of life.

பயன் அன்று ஆகிலும் பாங்கலர் ஆகிலும்
செயல் நன்றாகத் திருத்திப் பணி கொள்வான்
குயில் நின்றார் பொழில் சூழ் குருகூர் நம்பி
முயல்கின்றேன் உன் மொய்கழற்கு அன்பையே.
English Meaning:
Even if I am unworthy or lacking, he corrects me and accepts my service. O Nammalvar of Kurugur, I strive only to develop love for your sacred feet.
அன்பன் தன்னை அடைந்தவர்கட்கு எல்லாம்
அன்பன் தென்குருகூர் நகர் நம்பிக்கே
அன்பனாய் மதுரகவிச் சொன்ன சொல்
நம்புவார் பதி வைகுந்தம் காண்மினே.
English Meaning:
Madhurakavi, devoted to Nammalvar of Kurugur, says that those who believe in these verses and live by them will attain Vaikuntha (the divine abode).
Important lessons to learn:
- Guru Bhakti is equivalent to devotion towards Perumal.
- Guru can take us to Perumal, therefore surrendering at the feet of Acharyar is the fastest way to reach Perumal.
